DISTRICT NEWS – MILLMERRAN
ORANGE BLOSSOMS
HARBER – ELBORNE
The neat little Anglican Church of St. Peter’s, Millmerran, was on Wednesday last, the 3rd instant, the scene of a very nice wedding, the “high contracting parties” being Mr Joseph Harber, son of Mr Harber, of Hermitage, and Amy, eldest daughter of Mr George Elborne, Forest View, Millmerran.

The officiating clergyman was the Rev. Mr Marshall, Rector of Pittsworth, and the hour fixed for the ceremony, 11 a.m.

The church was very neatly decorated with greenery and flowers. Pot plants in full bloom ornamented the sanctuary, and the altar was embellished with vases of choice flowers, while the choir, under the leadership of Miss Walpole, was early in attendance, and rendered the usual hymns very effectively. Mrs Clowes presided at the harmonium. Long before 11 o’clock the guests began to arrive, and by the time the bride appeared more than 200 guests and friends were present. Precisely at 11 the bride came, and after the usual formalities had been gone through, leaning on her father’s arm, and followed by her bridesmaids, she advanced to the altar, where the bridegroom and his best man, Mr C. Hamill, awaited her. The marriage service was then proceeded with and gone through in a very impressive manner. A wedding march was played as the married pair left the church, receiving the hearty congratulations of their numerous friends as they went along. As the happy pair proceeded to the carriage and pair awaiting them they were pelted with rice and flowers.

In a report on this subject to omit a description would be like giving the play “Hamlet” with Hamlet left out. The bride’s trousseau was of white Japanese silk, tucked bodice trimmed with chiffon ribbon, sprays of orange blossom and lace, true lovers’ knots on shoulders. The skirt was richly trimmed with chiffon ribbon, sprays of orange blossom with streamers of white moire silk ribbon, a beautiful lace veil and wreath, white satin shoes, and white gloves, with a beautifully arranged bouquet, completed the bridal costume. The travelling dress was of fawn French poplin, the make coat and skirt, with pink bengaline silk vest. The bridesmaids were four, Miss Harber, sister to the bridegroom, and Miss Julia Elborne, sister to the bride. The others, the two little sisters of the bride. The two principal bridesmaids wore dresses of cashmere trimmed with lace, with heliotrope fronts, and skirts trimmed with white ribbon. The two little dots of bridesmaids, Alice and Jenny, looked charming in blue cashmere made sailor blouse and skirt with white silk front. The bridesmaids wore gold brooches, the gift of the bridegroom. He also gave the bride a rich dress ring, and she reciprocated the delicate attention by a pair of gold sleeve-links. I think it but fair to mention that all the dresses were made by Miss McIntosh and Mrs Niel of Pittsworth, and they reflect much credit on the good taste and manual dexterity of these “modistes”. Rarely have I seen such better fit and finish.

The wedding breakfast which was given at the bride’s home was recherche, both as to viands and fruit, etc., and at which over 200 sat down. Mr Grieve, Kurrowah, in proposing the health of the bride said: The crowd here was quite sufficient to prove, without any words from him, how widespread and deep was the respect in which the bride and her parents were held. He had known both bride and bridegroom for a long time. Both had his warmest respect. He had, however, no hesitation in saying that from his personal knowledge the bride was as good a girl as ever stood in shoe-leather. He would call on them to drink to the health and happiness of Mrs Harber. The toast was welcomed with enthusiastic applause, at the conclusion of which the bridegroom very neatly and concisely returned thanks.
Mr C. Hamill next proposed the health of the bridesmaids in few, but felicitous terms. The toat being duly honoured. Mr M.J. Hegarty rose to propose the health of the parents of the bride. He said the roll up here today showed plainer, and far better than he could tell them, how the bride’s parents are esteemed. He, as Mr Elborne’s neighbour, could truly say that Mr George Elborne was a “white man”. They all knew what that meant. He was a good living man too. He worked hard for the position he held, but did not grudge his neighbour to get along also. He had much pleasure in proposing the health of Mr and Mrs Elborne. (Prolonged cheers and singing, “He’s a Jolly Good Fellow”.) Mr Elborne, who seemed very much affected, briefly and courteously returned thanks for himself and Mrs Elborne.
Speeches were also delivered by Messrs I. Peardon Senr., J. McLoughlin, T. Muir and M. Noonan, and altogether the breakfast passed off in the most enjoyable manner imaginable. The bridal cake – a perfect beauty as to design being cut and distributed, the party separated into knots and coteries to discuss the bridal pair, and mayhap speculate on which among themselves would be the next “happy bride whom the sun shines on”.

The presents, among which were some dozen cheques – commodious presents, enough for a bridal tour – were numerous, varied, expensive and above all useful. I think when the bride settles down to housekeeping in her new home, the careful forethought of her many friends will have left her nothing to desire in furniture, both for use and ornament.
