Notes

Thomas JOLLEY, William’s father reported at the inquest that William JOLLEY had appeared melancholy and wished something would kill him.  It was his habit to carry  loaded pistols and stay out late at night after his professional attendance at concert receptions etc.  He wanted to be able to defend himself.  Thomas, had seen him on the ground about 200 yards from his house. He was rocking himself to and fro which was also his habit. He imagined there was some people in the home who had come to torment him. He drank heavily.  About 20 minutes later gunshots were heard.  His mother was reported to have asked him why he had shot himeself and he replied that he had no regrets about what he had done as he lay dying.  Dr William Edward Cook noted at the inquest that he had frequently seen William during the last few months due to his mental condition
