Alfred HALLAM served seven years as an apprentice at the Macclesfield Herald and Courier learning about the newspaper and printing industry.  He then became sub-editor and after 10 years left Macclesfield to work for the Bury Street Edmunds Free Press in Suffolk.  In 1905 he was the secretary of the Bury Street Edmunds YMCA and secretary for the Protestant Martyrs Memorial Street Edmunds.  He was author of several special articles on ‘Picturesque Suffolk’ and ‘Macclesfield Workers’.  In 1906 Alfred returned to Macclesfield as Editor of the Macclesfield Times.
