Remembered by grandson William as speaking about his home village of Grantley a lot. He remembered an Uncle returning from Waterloo who was a member of the life guards. This was recorded in a letter dated 3 April 1866 from Allen. It is thought this Samuel’s family originally came from Ireland. Other sources suggest that the Uncle at Waterloo was Samuel’s brother. He had two, the other did well in business as a furrier.

William was a widower when he married Ann STOCKDALE, there had been no children from his first marriage. Whilst living at Swinton he was paid 8 pounds 18s 6d for 21,000 bricks for Lord Swinton. He lived at Tile Sheds, Hutton Bonville from 1860 – 1881. He was still working aged 80 and in 1891 was an employer at brick and tile sheds. His cattle suffered from cattle rind pest. He saved for his retirement and the Odd fellows paid him until they ran out of funds. William asked the local MP to pursue to no avail. The move to Exelby was made by carts borrowed from Polly’s farm. Children assisting included Ernest ATKINSON and Milner NOBLE (Jane and Margaret’s sons). He got coal for the brickworks from Boroughbridge and it was transported by barge to Littlethorpe. He was Estate Bailiff for Earl SWINTON, Lord MASHAM’s father and started the brickyard there. It was suggested that although he was a good brick and tile maker, the fact that he could not keep an eye on all three brickyards allowed people to take advantage of him. He was adept at reading the weather from the sky. He is shown as living in the village street in Exelby, LEEMING on 1901 census with his wife Ann. He was living on his own means.
